The construction of the thermal baths of Mont-Dore, from 1817 to 1823, was entrusted to the architect Louis-Charles Ledru. Neo-Byzantine style, they have been enlarged and modernized since. The interior decoration has multiple references to Roman, Byzantine architecture and Auvergne Romanesque art. They are considered to be the largest in Europe. The Hall of Sources (whose metal frame is due to Gustave Eiffel) and the room of the lost steps of the first floor are the two wonders to visit. The painter Roger Forissier made a mural there in 1975 inaugurated by President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. Each February takes place, within its walls, the SAFE (European Fantastic Art Fair), where painters of international renown from the Dalinian movement exhibit.
Lake Guéry is the highest lake in Auvergne perched at 1,247 m, located 9 km from Mont-Dore in the direction of Clermont-Ferrand. It is known to be the only lake in Western Europe where ice fishing, known as hole or Eskimo fishing, is practiced. When the ice cover is sufficient, as of the opening (generally second weekend of March), the fishermen dig a hole in it, throw their lines and have only to wait for the good will of the trout and other pike. This event, managed by the Mont-Dore anglers' society, attracts thousands of dip net aficionados each year. Note that even without ice, fishing also takes place.
Puy de Sancy is 1,886 meters from the highest point of the Massif Central. It is on the territory of the commune of Mont-Dore and it is there that the sources of the Dordogne are found. It is the domain of many and very rare varieties of plants and insects (especially butterflies). Sheep, chamois, marmots, eagles have chosen it as their domain. You can also access the summit of Sancy where there is a very nice orientation table, by two cable cars.
